Different responses to elevated temperature in the representative strains of strawberry pathogenic Colletotrichum spp.from eastern China

摘要: Anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum spp. is a destructive threat for various crops worldwide. The variations in temperature responses were largely elusive for Colletotrichum spp. Eight representative strains belonging to five species from infected strawberries in eastern China were comparatively characterized by their in vitro growth and pathogenic traits under varying temperatures. A beta-function modeling distinguished the optimal and maximum temperatures for the mycelium growth of each strain. These strains varied markedly in heat tolerance. Significant intraspecific and interspecific variations were observed among these fungal strains in their thermal responses. Favorable temperature varied with fungal strain as well as biological process. C. siamense and C. gloeosporioides s.s displayed the best tolerance to elevated temperature in mycelium growth compared to the other strains. C. fructicola and C. aenigma showed moderate thermal tolerance together with a fast conidia germination. C. nymphaeae exhibited weak tolerance to high temperature in mycelial growth but maintained fruitful sporulation under all temperatures examined. From 25 to 30 degrees C, all Colletotrichum strains except for Cs:Nj2 caused more severe syndromes in strawberry leaves. Potential tradeoff between pathogenicity and tolerance to high temperature was observed for two strains of a same species. This work shed some lights on the temperature responses and diversified fitness of Colletotrichum spp., which will be beneficial for disease management and crop resistance breeding in a global warming context. Further studies combining thermal phenotyping and molecular genotyping at a population scale are required to finely determine the temperature adaptation of the prevailing species C. fructicola and C. siamense.
