Impact of biochar on ammonia emission mitigation and enhanced humification in the bio-drying process of food waste digestate

摘要: This study investigated the impact of biochar addition on ammonia emissions and humic characteristics during the bio-drying process of food waste digestate. The research also explored microbial mechanisms affecting the optimization of the C/N ratio in bio-drying through high-throughput sequencing. The results revealed a substantial reduction in ammonia emissions by 41.1-49.6 % with biochar inclusion. Adjusting C/N ratio to 20 using biochar led to a noteworthy increase in the humification index (1.2) and germination index (112.1 %) within an 8-day period. Redundancy analysis further demonstrated that biochar addition influenced the microbial community by impacting pH, along with other environmental factors. The enrichment particularly benefited functional phyla, including Gemmatimonadota and Actinobacteriota, crucial for degrading challenging organic compounds, thus promoting thorough humification of digestate, reducing phytotoxicity, and enhancing the quality and safety. The study provides valuable insights into the potential of biochar-assisted bio-drying process for sustainable waste management and organic fertilizer production.
