Potential allelopathic effects of volatile oils from Descurainia sophia (L.) Webb ex Prantl on wheat

摘要: Field and laboratory studies were conducted in Beijing, China, in 2008, to determine whether Descurainia sophia volatile oils can exhibit allelopathic effects on the seed germination and seedling growth of 8 wheat cultivars mediated by soil and whether these cultivars were differentially susceptible. ln addition, the allelopathic effect of the volatile oils on the microbial community of the soil in which the wheat cultivars grew was also assessed. Aerial parts of D. sophia were collected, dried and subjected to hydrodistillation. The chemical composition of the essential oil was analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Soil samples from experimental fields were also collected and analysed. Wheat seeds were treated with a saturated aqueous solution of essential oils and germination and seedling growth were determined and the effects of the aqueous solution on the culturable bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes were detected in the soil samples. Results showed that seed germination of the wheat cultivars was inhibited and the response toward the phytotoxicity of the aqueous solution differed markedly among the cultivars. The seedling shoot and root growth (in terms of both length and dry weight) were also significantly inhibited in response to the volatile aqueous solution compared to the control. The total count of culturable bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes in all spo; samples treated with the aqueous solution was also significantly decreased compared to the control. These results demonstrated that the saturated aqueous solution of the volatile oils from D. sophia possessed strong phytotoxic potential and caused substantial germination reduction and seedling growth inhibition of the 8 wheat cultivars.
