Comparison of flower bud differentiation in strawberry in different latitudes and altitudes

摘要: The influence of environment at different altitudes and latitudes on strawberry flowering was explored by investigating flower differentiation and development of the apical buds of strawberry plants during summer and autumn. The investigations were done on plants propagated at three high-altitude nurseries and a low-altitude one. The influence of environment at different altitudes and latitudes on strawberry flowering was explored. The results showed that flower buds on plants grown at all high altitude nurseries differentiated earlier than those at low altitude. The blooming period of the plants grown at the high-altitude nurseries was 1 to 2 months earlier than those grown at low-altitude. Although the photoperiod during summer is considered too long for flower initiation in strawberry (day length >12 h), the daily minimum mean temperature in summer in these high-altitude areas is sufficient to induce and differentiate strawberry flower buds, which probably will make the short day (June-bearing) cultivars fruiting year-round in China.
