Epicoccum sorghinum as leaf spot disease-causing pathogen in ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) in China

摘要: Ginger is widely cultivated in China, and it is an indispensable spice and condiment in our daily life. In October 2020, ginger plants exhibiting leaf spot symptoms were observed in many agricultural fields in the Shandong province. In this research, the pathogen causing these symptoms was successfully isolated from symptomatic ginger leaves. The fungal isolates were identified as Epicoccum sorghinum using morphological characteristics and multigene phylogenetic analysis of internal transcribed spacer region of ribosomal DNA (ITS), 28S nrDNA (LSU), and beta-tubulin (tub2). Pathogenicity tests showed that the symptoms caused by the pathogen were similar to those on naturally infected plants in the field, confirming that E. sorghinum was the causal agent of ginger leaf spot. To our knowledge, this is the first report of E. sorghinum as the pathogen of leaf spot on ginger in China. These findings provide essential information for formulating effective management strategies to curb the disease spread.
