Biodegradable film combined with ploughing: An approach to improve the sustainability of rainfed spring maize production

摘要: Whether the use of biodegradable film (BM) in specific agroecosystem can mitigate soil microplastic (MP) contamination and serve as an alternative to polyethylene film (PM) needs to be monitored and fully evaluated over time. Therefore, this study focused on the effects of different mulching practices applied in combination with double-ridges and furrows (DRF) and flat planting (FP) on spring maize growth and yield, soil hydrothermal conditions, microplastic (MP) content, and economic performance in rainfed areas. The five-year study showed that, in contrast to PM, BM did not contribute to an increase in soil MP content. On the other hand, it optimized heat partitioning and rainwater infiltration, resulting in a significant increase in soil water storage at maturity by 5.35-17.29 mm (P < 0.05). Furthermore, compared with other measures, DRFB (which integrates DRF with BM) effectively delayed the onset of maize leaf senescence and live root apoptosis by 0.82-1.21 days and 0.83-3.54 days, respectively. Compared with FP, the DRF achieved higher maize yield mainly by increasing the number of kernels per ear; meanwhile, it reduced the coefficient of variation of yield and slightly improved the output-toinput ratio (ROI). Except for the dry year (2021), the net incomes and ROI of DRFB were comparable to those of DRFP (DRF combined with PM). This is due to the labor cost associated with recovering PM residues offsetting the high price of BM. The combination of subjective and objective weight-TOPSIS (entropy weight method combined with a technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution) showed that DRFB ranked first in the combined score of crops, ecological, and economic benefits. Therefore, DRFB is a viable maize cultivation method for future wetter years; however, FM must still be conservatively adopted in dry years.
