摘要: Nitrite one of the most common contaminants affecting aquatic species. In this study, we investigated the biochemical markers and histopathological changes in the liver of the American bullfrog (Aquarana catesbeiana) exposed to nitrite at different concentrations (0, 5, 10, and 15 mg/L) for 96 h. Results revealed that blood biochemical markers such as alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were significantly increased in the American bullfrog groups exposed to nitrite. Additionally, there was a significant increase in the activities of antioxidative enzymes such as total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) in the liver. Furthermore, the liver tissue of bullfrogs exposed to nitrite exhibited pronounced inflammatory infiltration, increased melano macrophage density, vacuolization, and shrinkage of hepatocytes. This study provided an avenue to understand the sensitivity of the American bullfrog to nitrite, suggesting irreversible liver damage even at low nitrite concentrations (5 mg/L). The results underscore the potential harm of nitrites to bullfrogs, contributing to optimized management strategies in American bullfrog farming.
