摘要: Seed size is reported to directly affect seed germination, seedling survival and crop yield in many plant species. Ginseng is a perennial medicinal plant propagated by seed, and its seeds vary greatly in size even within a single plant. Ginseng seeds from two ginseng cultivars were divided into large, medium and small sizes according to seed width; then, seed size effects on seedling emergence, growth, yield and ginsenoside content were evaluated. The results indicated that ginseng seedlings grown from large- and medium-sized seeds showed significantly (P < 0.05) higher emergence in all growth seasons. However, seed size had little effect on survival rate during each growth season. Seed size showed a positive relationship with seedling stem height, stem diameter and leaf area, although stem height and diameter did not differ between each size in the first growth season. Larger seeds generally resulted in greater main root length, root diameter, single root weight and yields after three years growth. It is interesting that seedlings grown from smaller seeds had higher ginsenoside content in the main root as compared with larger ones. In conclusion, the grading of ginseng seeds prior to sowing is necessary for practical production.
