First report of skin ulceration caused by Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae in net-cage cultured black rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli)

摘要: In July 2016 and August 2017, there were two severe outbreaks of serious skin ulcers in rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli), which were cultured in offshore net-cages around Daqing Island, China. One pathogenic bacterium was isolated from the skin lesions of diseased fish. Such isolate was identified as Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae through morphological observation, physiological and biochemical tests as well as gyrB gene sequencing. Artificial challenge test confirmed that this strain had strong pathogenicity to black rockfish and could cause serious skin ulcers. The symptoms were consistent with those of naturally infected fish. Its 14-day LD50 in for black rockfish was 8.78 x 10(2) cfu/g body weight.
