Synergistic hydrothermal humidification of corn stover and swine manure for the production of nitrogen-rich aromatic artificial humic acid

摘要: Nitrogen-rich humic acid improves soil fertility by supplying organic matter and essential nitrogen. However, the limited chemical composition and reactivity of single biomass feedstocks pose challenges for the efficient synthesis of nitrogen-rich artificial humic acid (AHA). This study proposes a co-hydrothermal humification strategy to synthesize nitrogen-rich AHA from corn stover (CS) and swine manure (SM). The synergistic interactions of the binary mixture under different reaction temperatures were systematically examined. Results showed that the highest selectivity (52.17 %) and yield (28.23 %) of AHA were achieved at 200 degrees C with a CS/SM ratio of 1:1. The carbon and nitrogen contents of the binary mixture increased by 6.22 % similar to 30.02 % and 1.01 % similar to 15.07 %, respectively. Furthermore, the diversity of functional groups, such as aromatic structures, nitrogen-containing heterocycles, carbon fixation components, and oxygen-containing groups, was improved through the synergistic action of Maillard reaction-driven nitrogen heterocycle formation and intermolecular cross-linking in the binary mixture. In this process, CS provided the carbon skeleton and reducing sugars, while SM supplied the nitrogen source. Their synergistic interaction facilitated the synthesis of AHA with higher aromaticity, increased unsaturation, and lower molecular weight, which collectively improved its suitability for soil application. This work presents a novel strategy for valorizing agricultural waste into nitrogen-rich AHA, contributing to sustainable resource utilization and soil amendment.
