Broad host adaptation of Mythimna separata mediated by gut bacteria and detoxification enzyme gene MsGSTd3

摘要: To explore the potential adaptation mechanisms of Mythimna separata to broad host plants, five strains of this polyphagous pest were established based on host plants maize, wheat, soybean, lettuce, and romaine, respectively. All five strains of M. separata were capable of completing their life cycle, but their fitness levels vary. In addition, the gut bacterial community composition and diversity of these five M. separata strains were different, but Enterobacter cloacae and Enterococcus mundtii were the dominant bacteria shared by all five strains. Silencing of detoxification enzyme gene MsGSTd3 not only increased the mortality of all five M. separata strains but also decreased the copy number of the dominant intestinal bacteria E. mundtii, suggesting a positive correlation between E. mundtii and MsGSTd3. Taken together, this study revealed that the adaptation of M. separata to host plants was a complicated process involving multiple factors such as gut bacteria and the expression of detoxification enzyme gene, which contributed M. separata to successfully be adapted to the defenses of various host plants. Understanding the broad host adaptation mechanisms of M. separata will facilitate the development of management strategies against this pest and contribute to the safety of crop production.
