Impact of straw return and decomposition agent on Tibetan barley yield and soil microbial community in Xizang, China

摘要: Returning straw to the fields is an important practice for enhancing soil organic matter, however, its effects on Tibetan barley growth and soil microbial communities of use have not been comprehensively investigated. A 2-year field experiment with eight treatments varying in straw return and decomposition agent application was conducted, to assess their effects of straw return on Tibetan barley yield and soil microbial communities. The results indicated that straw can decomposes slowly at low temperatures if soil moisture is adequate. The addition of a decomposition agent significantly accelerated this process. Returning straw supplemented with a decomposition agent for two years resulted in a greater increase in Tibetan barley yield than a single year of return. Soil microbial analysis showed that straw return increased relative abundances of Acidobacteria and Chloroflexi, while Actinobacteria decreased and Proteobacteria declined with higher straw return. When the amount of straw returned was <= 50%, Chao1, Observed_species and Shannon were higher in treatments with the decomposition agent compared to those without. These findings indicate that the decomposition agent is effective for straw return in highland areas, and may support farmers in developing more improved straw management strategies for Tibetan barley cultivation in Xizang, China.
