Effect of boric acid-borax combined thermal modification on the properties of rubberwood

摘要: Rubberwood (Hevea brasiliensis), a tropical timber widely used in furniture manufacturing and architectural decoration, exhibits natural properties that often fail to meet the demands of practical applications, necessitating improvement through modification techniques. This study systematically analyzed the trends in the physical and mechanical properties, chemical composition, and microstructure of rubberwood subjected to combined treatment with boric acid-borax preservatives and thermal modification. As the preservative concentration and thermal modification temperature increased, the physical and mechanical properties improved. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results revealed a gradual decline in cellulose crystallinity, a reduction in hydroxyl and aliphatic hydrocarbon content, and the degradation of cellulose and hemicellulose, while lignin demonstrated greater chemical stability under high-temperature conditions. The results indicated that high-intensity treatments (16% preservative concentration and thermal modification at 215 degrees C) caused significant structural damage, resulting in a decline in overall performance. In contrast, rubberwood treated with moderate preservative concentrations (4% or 8%) and thermal modification at 185 degrees C achieved the most balanced performance in terms of treatment cost and wood quality. The research provides guidance for optimizing rubberwood modification techniques and lays a theoretical foundation for its wider practical application.
