Sustainable closed-loop biorefinery of γ-valerolactone from lignocellulosic biomass: Pretreatments of multiple biomass and synthesis of γ-valerolactone from multiple biomass-derived feedstocks

摘要: Lignocellulosic biomass as a green renewable energy can not only alleviate the dependence on petrochemical energy, but also reduce the waste of resources caused by the disposal of both agricultural and forestry waste. As an advanced green renewable solvent, gamma-valerolactone (GVL) is used in the pretreatment of biomass, which can effectively decompose the compact structure of lignocellulosic biomass to efficiently separate cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose. The synthesis of GVL is a key step in sustainable development, so the synthesis of GVL offers a promising scenario within the current circular economy and green exploitation models that have been emerging globally. Herein, we summarized the pretreatment methods of lignocellulosic biomass, focusing mainly on the application of GVL in biomass pretreatment and provided theoretical guidance. An intuitive and comprehensive retrospection of the reaction pathways for GVL synthesis from several biomass-derived products were also presented. This review provided a complete scenario for closed-loop biorefining based on GVL, including opportunities and drawbacks, together with practical suggestions and research gaps aiming to achieved a closedloop biorefinery process for GVL.
