摘要: Plateau pika (Ochotona curzoniae) burrowing greatly influences ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) in alpine grasslands. However, the degree to which this activity would affect EMF in alpine grasslands lack general cognition. Here, we examined pika burrowing impacts on EMF across elevation gradients in alpine grasslands. The results furnished compelling evidence that pika burrowing activities were associated with reduced ecosystem functioning across elevation gradients (p < 0.001). Specifically, plant productivity, soil nutrients, and soil carbon all tended to decline under pika burrowing-induced disturbances (p < 0.05). We also observed that the EMF index decreased in response to pika burrowing-induced bioturbation. The effect of pika burrowing on the EMF was stronger (p < 0.001) at higher elevations, even in high-moisture and nutrient-rich environments. Pika burrowing-induced reductions in plant cover, biomass, and soil nutrients were primary drivers of the observed decrease in EMF. The implications of our findings are that plant biomass and soil nutrients serve as critical indicators of variations in the EMF index under pika burrowing-induced disturbances, and they are fundamental to maintaining multiple ecological functions in high-elevation alpine grasslands.
