Functional traits in crop wild relatives of Neotropical origin: implications for herbivore resistance and biological control

摘要: As one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth, the Neotropics harbor the centers of origin of several food crops of global economic importance. Their crop wild relatives (CWRs) represent a vast yet largely untapped genetic reservoir for crop improvement, containing a myriad of genes associated with direct or indirect defenses that are absent in their cultivated counterparts. In this review paper, we present a systematic overview of the functional traits present in the CWRs of six food crops of Neotropical origin i.e., papaya, pineapple, avocado, tomato, potato and Capsicum spp. peppers. The enumerated traits pertain to antixenosis or antibiosis and biological control (i.e., recruitment of invertebrate natural enemies) and include leaf pubescence or trichomes, secondary metabolites and the constitutive or inducible emission of infochemicals. The associated tri- or multi-trophic defenses are geared towards several cosmopolitan herbivores, disease vectors and/ or prominent crop pests such as the silverleaf whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius), the two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch, or the Colorado potato beetle Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say). This comprehensive listing of functional traits per crop, CWR and target herbivore offers invaluable inputs for future (public or private) crop improvement programs, diversification strategies and related efforts to ecologically intensify the world's agri-food production systems.
