摘要: Background and aimsViruses impact nearly all organisms on Earth, with significant implications for agriculture, health, and biogeochemical processes. However, the mechanisms driving viral diversity in the rhizosphere remain poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to investigate the composition and activity of root-associated viral communities across different crop types.MethodsSoil meta-transcriptomes from four crops (rice, maize, soybean, and wheat) were analyzed to assess viral diversity.ResultsThe results revealed that the family Baculoviridae is widely distributed among these crops, with notable differences in root-associated viral communities between them. The viral community composition was less influenced by abiotic factors such as temperature, soil water content, and glyphosate application. Furthermore, functional analyses suggested that proteins encoded by these viruses may directly or indirectly impact agricultural soil metabolism. Through de novo assembly, we identified 179 viral fragments, including unique viral genomes, 90% of which were taxonomically classified.ConclusionOverall, this study highlights the diversity in viral community composition and ecology across different crop soil compartments. These findings underscore the importance of considering soil viruses in efforts to harness the rhizosphere microbiome for food security and environmental sustainability in agricultural systems.
