Nucleic acid-based reference materials: A "ruler" for precision molecular diagnostics

摘要: Analytical chemistry is experiencing a growing demand for reliable and traceable results, which have significant implications for public health and food safety. The COVID-19 pandemic further underscores the need for accurate and dependable molecular diagnostics. Nucleic acid-based reference materials (NARMs) play a crucial role in ensuring the quality of results. Notably, NARMs have gained increased attention following the outbreak of COVID-19. While previous reviews introduced NARMs but overlooked their applications in different fields. Moreover, the integration of multiple methods represents a new trend in the preparation of NARMs, but these have not appeared in previous reviews. Therefore, this review delineates NARMs classification, synthesizes characterization techniques, reviews their applications in virus diagnosis, animal diseases, pathogenic microorganisms, genetic diseases and genetically modified organism detection, and provides a perspective on NARMs' development and current challenges. In-depth study of NARMs will be significant for precise molecular diagnostics in biology, agriculture and public health.
