摘要: Epidermal waxes play a critical role in maintaining fruit quality in the post-harvest stage. Nevertheless, the metabolic processes involving these waxes across different goji berry (Lycium barbarum L.) varieties during storage remain poorly understood. This study investigates the chemical composition, structure, and performance of epidermal waxes in three goji berry varieties: the widely cultivated "Ningqi-1" (N1), and the higher waxcontent varieties "Ningnongqi-17" (N17) and "Ningnongqi-18" (N18). Throughout the storage period, all varieties exhibited the changes and degradation of epidermal waxes, leading to a notable decline in nutritional quality. Elevated expression of wax-metabolizing enzyme genes highlighted degradation of cuticular waxes as a key factor. Notably, N17 displayed superior storage quality followed by N18 and N1. Whereas, the N1 variety exhibited a well-dispersed lamellar waxy layer, whereas N17 and N18 showed a more structured elongated granular waxy layer. These findings offer crucial insights for global horticultural-industry stakeholders for formulating effective post-harvest storage strategies for goji berry fruits.
