Mottle necrosis caused by Globisporangium ultimum var. ultimum on sweet potato roots during harvest and storage in China

摘要: Mottle necrosis of sweet potato roots was observed frequently during harvest and storage in Hebei Province, China, from 2018 to 2021. The disease incidence was 1-3% during harvest and increased to 10-30% during storage in underground cellars. The typical symptom of the disease is the soft cheese consistency of the affected tissue. The pathogen was isolated from diseased roots. Based on morphological characteristics and sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region of ribosomal DNA (rDNA-ITS), beta-tubulin (beta-tub), cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (cox I) and cytochrome c oxidase subunit II (cox II), the pathogen was identified as Globisporangium ultimum var. ultimum. Furthermore, a pathogenicity test was performed by proving Koch's postulate to confirm the pathogen. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of mottle necrosis on sweet potato roots caused by G. ultimum var. ultimum during harvest and storage in China.
