Biothermodynamic and kinetic analysis of syntrophic methanogenesis mediated by conductive materials

摘要: Enhancement of direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) with versatile conductive materials (CMs) supplementation has received considerable attention for promoting biomethane production in anaerobic digestion (AD). Herein, the influence of CMs as redox mediator (RM) on the biothermodynamic and kinetic properties of DIET methanogenesis at different stages in AD was investigated. The redox potential of RM (ERM) significantly affected the total available energy in the system but had no influence on the net available energy. CMs with a higher or lower redox potential (e.g., above -0.184 or below -0.290 V) could trigger the DIET methanogenesis from propionic acid under standard conditions. Furthermore, these CMs also improved total available energy in the system, thereby promoting the growth of syntrophic consortia in terms of increases in biomass yield coefficient and maximum specific growth rate, and a decrease in decay coefficient. This study contributes to enriching the CMs' DIET-promoting mechanism.
