Influencing Factors of the 1-Deoxynojirimycin Biosynthesis in Morus alba

摘要: 1-Deoxynojirimycin (DNJ; 2R,3R,4R,5S-2-hydroxymethyl-3,4,5-piperidinetriol), an abundant alkaloid in mulberry, exhibits strong competitive inhibition against the a-glucosidase. To maximally utilizing mulberry resources and to understand the mechanism of DNJ formation, the present study investigated factors influencing DNJ biosynthesis in Morus-alba. The results showed that the aqueous HCl immersion was one method with relative high efficiency for the extraction of DNJ. The relationship between DNJ content and factors including geographic locations, soil properties, meteorological factors, and harvest time was firstly revealed as follows: 1) mulberry shoots taken from the top part of the branches had the highest content of DNJ, followed by roots, young leaves and mature leaves; 2) mulberry growing in areas with higher latitude had higher content of DNJ; 3) alkaline and low total nitrogen content in soil was advantageous to the biosynthesis of DNJ; and 4) the active peak periods of DNJ biosynthesis in a day appeared at 06:0010:00 a.m. and 18:00 p.m.
