Genetic diversity and structure of the core collection for maize inbred lines in China

摘要: Assessment of genetic diversity and structure of inbred lines is useful for selection of parents in developing new hybrids and association studies. In this paper 288 maize inbred lines, including 242 inbreds of the core collection established in China and elite lines from other origins, were assayed for polymorphism diversity at 49 Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR) loci. In agreement with previous reports our results showed that the average of alleles per locus was 5.34 and gene diversity for the SSRs was 0.57. A clustering analysis placed the 288 lines in 4 clusters that correspond to major breeding groups (Lancaster, Tangsipingtou, Reid, and P), largely consistent with known pedigrees of the lines. However, in contrast to previous results of heterotic groupings, based on pedigrees and combining ability, the Lancaster group included only the Mo17 subgroup, excluding the Zi330 subgroup. Moreover, neither Zi330-derived nor Ludahonggu-derived lines were assigned to independent groups. The number of lines with a membership probabilities of >= 0.75 accounted for only 25%; a large proportion (57%) of the remaining lines had mixed-origin. These results indicated that a great number of Chinese inbred lines possess mixed-origin originating from crosses among different germplasm sources. A mini core set, including 94 genetically diverse inbreds out of 288, mainly of Chinese and temperate origins, was defined.
