Progress in monitoring and spatial simulation of soil moisture

摘要: Monitoring and simulating soil moisture are useful for planning and management of land and water resources, and the research on soil water has been an important part in the Global Soil Wetness Project and become one of the focuses in the study of Global Climate Change. This paper reviews progress in researches on soil moisture monitoring, spatial variability and simulation. It is found that: (1) The "3S " techniques including Geographical Information System (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS), and Global Position System (GPS) have been widely used in soil moisture monitoring. The pre-processing, communicating and mining for soil moisture data have been timely dealt with by computer networks in some developed countries. However, many developing countries including China failed to do that. (2) The Geo-statistics theory has already been extensively employed to analyze the variable spatial pattern of soil moisture, but most existed researches have been confined to fine and small scales, and macro-scale researches are rare. (3) After analyzing advantages and disadvantages of the established models for simulating soil moisture, this paper proposes that integrated non-parameter models should be established to simulate soil moisture by combining "3S" techniques and Geo-statistics theory. This paper attempts to probe into the study of monitoring and simulating soil moisture and summarize the methods and approaches used in soil water research.
