摘要: There are more than 70 species (belonging to 8 general of edible Liliaceae vegetables in China. In Allium, garlic, welsh onion. Chinese chives and onion rank the first four places, respectively. Large amounts of garlic has long been cultivated in China both for its edible parts of tender seedlings. Flower stalks and bulbs, and for its medicinal effects. At present, 148 accessions of garlic have been collected. The area and output for garlic amount to 3.74% and 2.39% of the total area and output of vegetables in China, respectively. Although more than 700 years in record, onion has been cultivated intensively for a history of only 90 years. Up to date, 54 accessions and 9 clones of its 3 varieties have been collected. The area and output for onion amount to 0.7% and 0.68% of the total area and output of vegetables in China, respectively, for laging behind those for welsh onion and Chinese Chives. The main areas for garlic and onion production fall on central and eastern parts of China. The output per unit varies as a result of cultivars and cultivation practices. To improve garlic and onion production, new germplasms have to be introduced, viruses must be eliminated from the existing materials and high-quality garlics and onions of storage ability are to be bred. Seeds are produced in the northern cool areas and then transferred to, central and eastern provinces for production. These measures will definitely accelerate the improving procedure.
