摘要: A high hard seed percentage is a characteristic of seed lots of yellow serradella (Ornithopus compressus) and slender serradella (O. pinnatus). Soaking seeds of one seed lot of each of these species in concentrated sulphuric acid (98%) for 30 minutes reduced hard seed from 88% and 68% to 1% and 11% respectively without causing seed damage. Although more than 90% viability was recorded after this soaking time, actual germination at 20 degrees C was only 40 and 61% respectively because of the presence of a high percentage of fresh ungerminated seeds. However, when germination temperature was reduced to 15 degrees C, germination of the same seed lots was 94% in yellow serradella and 81% in slender serradella following 30 minutes of acid scarification. This result not only confirms the internationally agreed germination temperature for O. compressus, but also indicates that the same germination temperature is suitable for O. pinnatus. Soaking seed for longer than 30 minutes in sulphuric acid increased the percentage of abnormal seedlings recorded in O. pinnatus but not in O. compressus. The implications of these results are briefly discussed.
