摘要: Aquaculture has become one of the fastest-growing sectors globally, partly due to the production of non-native aquatic species. This practice has facilitated the introduction of aquaculture-related species, both farmed species and other unintentionally introduced organisms via aquaculture pathway, beyond their native ranges. Some of these species have caused extensively ecological and economic consequences. In this study, we provide a comprehensive assessment of globally reported economic costs of non-native species specifically associated with aquaculture for final harvest for consumption, using the InvaCost database (v.4.1). We estimate that between 1970 and 2020, the total global reported economic costs of 34 aquaculture-related non-native species reached at least US $15.2 billion, with amphibians (US$ 6.0 billion, 39.8 %), fishes (US$ 5.0 billion, 33.2 %), and mollusks (US$ 3.9 billion, 25.5 %) as the most costly groups. Reported costs were disproportionately distributed across continents, with Europe bearing the highest reported losses (US$ 11.2 billion), followed by Asia (US $3.7 billion), while costs in South America, Oceania, North America, and Africa were all below US$ 0.15 billion. Our findings indicate a notable gap in reported economic losses, particularly in low and middle-income countries (e.g. China, Brazil) where aquaculture plays a crucial role, likely leading to underestimation of the actual costs. Authorities-stakeholders (US$ 6.3 billion) and fisheries (US$ 5.1 billion) were the major impacted sectors. A vast majority of reported costs were associated with direct damages (US$ 8.7 billion) and management (US$ 6.4 billion). Thus, our results highlight the need for addressing these challenges through improved data collection and sustainable management practices in aquaculture to mitigate the ecological and economic impacts of non-native species escaping from facilities.
