摘要: Tobacco wastes are a collection of residues from various stages of cigarette production, embodying a dual nature of biomass resource and organic solid waste. Effectively recycling these residues is essential for the tobacco industry. Thermochemical conversion into high-value products, such as biofuels and carbon materials, offers the most sustainable approach to resource recycling, green ecology, and waste management, which has been extensively explored over the past few decades. In this review, recent advancements in the thermochemical valorization of tobacco wastes into biofuels and carbon materials are examined in detail. The thermochemical pathways and their wide-ranging environmental and industrial applications are thoroughly discussed. It is suggested that recycling tobacco wastes into gaseous biofuels or carbon adsorbents is a more favorable option. To achieve clean and efficient cascade utilization, a combination strategy of chemical-functionalized carbonization and steam catalytic gasification is recommended for the environmentally friendly and cost-effective recycling of tobacco wastes. This process results in the co-production of nitrogen-doped biocarbon and hydrogen-enriched gaseous biofuel. The biocarbon can be utilized directly for soil conservation or modified to adsorb specific gaseous and wastewater pollutants while the gaseous biofuel can supply heat for the system or be refined as feedstock for chemical production. The precise regulation of element migration and structure development throughout the integrated process is crucial for optimizing both the yield and quality of the target products. This review aims to offer an overview and insights into thermochemically valorizing tobacco wastes together with other similar light industrial residues for researchers in the field.
