Harnessing Nanomaterials for Effective Phytoremediation: A Review

摘要: Phytoremediation, the use of plants to mitigate environmental pollution, has gained prominence as a sustainable and cost-effective approach to remediate contaminated sites. However, its effectiveness can be limited by factors such as slow degradation rates and low plant uptake of pollutants. In recent years, nanomaterials have emerged as powerful tools to enhance phytoremediation processes by improving pollutant availability, increasing plant uptake, and facilitating pollutant degradation. This review explores the role of nanomaterials in enhancing phytoremediation, focusing on their mechanisms of action, applications in heavy metal and organic pollutant remediation, and integration with agro-production for sustainable soil management. Here, we review how nanomaterials can augment pollutant stabilization, accumulation, and degradation processes in plants and the rhizosphere. Furthermore, we highlight the importance of careful selection and application of nanomaterials to ensure effective phytoremediation outcomes while minimizing potential ecological risks. Overall, this review underscores the promising potential of nanomaterials in advancing phytoremediation strategies for environmental restoration and agricultural sustainability.
