Nondestructive analytical techniques as a tool for detecting herbal medicines: a review

摘要: In recent years, herbal medicines (HMs) have played an important role in maintaining human health. The quality of HMs associated with clinical treatment effects and can be easily affected by a variety of factors during the supply process. With the increasing global demand for HMs, there is an urgent need for reliable analytical methods to evaluate the quality. The traditional methods are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and expensive. Emerging nondestructive analytical techniques stand out due to their fast, nondestructive, and accurate characteristics. This review summarizes the advantages, disadvantages, and practicality of nondestructive analytical techniques mainly based on spectroscopy and electronic sensor techniques in recent years, as well as the latest advances in the quality assessment of HMs. The conclusion indicates that nondestructive analytical techniques are an effective tool for detecting HMs, and the emergence of portable devices has improved the convenience of real-time detection. The limitations currently faced by nondestructive analytical techniques were pointed out and discuss the application prospects. This review provides ideas for the further development and application of nondestructive analytical techniques in HMs research.
