Effect of Dairy Cattle Slurry Application on Alfalfa Yield, Nitrogen Utilization, and Nitrogen Surplus

摘要: Dairy cattle farming generates large amounts of slurry for use in agricultural fields. It is important to determine nitrogen (N) fertilizer values and their environmental effects. This study aimed to determine the effects of dairy cattle slurry on dry matter yield, ammonia volatilization, N leaching, and N surplus. A column experiment with alfalfa in repacked fluvo-aguic soil was conducted. Cattle slurry or mineral fertilizer was applied in two dressings at the first alfalfa cut, with a target amount of 90 kg ha-1. Treatments (no fertilizer, mineral fertilizer, combined application of slurry and mineral fertilizer, and slurry treatment) were established using a randomized design with four replicates. Significant increases in dry matter yield and N uptake were observed for all N treatments relative to the treatment with no fertilizer. The alfalfa dry matter yield and N uptake response to dairy cattle slurry N were 5563.86 kg ha-1 and 218.61 kg ha-1, higher than those of the mineral fertilizer treatment. The slurry treatment showed a 28.6% higher cumulative ammonia volatilization than the no-fertilizer treatment and a 2.43% reduction compared to the mineral fertilizer treatment. The total N leaching losses ranged from 37.32 to 38.69 kg ha-1 for dairy cattle slurry and mineral fertilizer, and dairy cattle slurry application did not affect N leaching. The N surplus in the slurry treatment was 21.92% lower than that in the mineral fertilizer treatment. Using dairy cattle slurry to replace mineral fertilizers is a suitable approach to ensure high dry matter yields, high N uptake, and reduced N surplus and N losses.
