Grafting and Cultivation Techniques for Bitter Gourd

摘要: The grafted seedlings have been widely used in continuous cropping of gourds and vegetables in production practice, as they bear advantages of disease resistance, increased yield, more vigorous growth, and reduced fertilizer usage. The top insertion graft of bitter gourd was introduced in this paper. With a pointed bamboo stick, the true leaf and the growing point from the rootstock were removed; a deep hole was made with the bamboo stick on the upper portion of the rootstock; the scion was cut with a razor blade and then inserted into the rootstock, being held in place with a grafting clip. The excellent grafting technique and cultivation procedures of 'Reyan No. 1' dark green bitter gourd variety were developed. The hybrid cultivar of bottle gourd, 'strong No. 1' was the suitable rootstock on all criteria; therefore, it was adopted for the grafting of 'Reyan No. 1' dark green bitter gourd. The grafting process was described in this paper.
