Antibiotic-induced male-sterility in oilseed flax

摘要: Use of male sterility is a key technique to produce hybrid seed in self-pollinated crops. Success in obtaining male sterility via antibiotic induction has been reported in several crops. Five different antibiotics of 500, 1000, and 1500 mg L-1 were used to treat seeds of three oilseed flax varieties. Male sterile plants occurred at a rate of 0.25 to 0.80% in the M1 generation in nine of the 45 treatment combinations. In the M2 generation, 2.17 to 58.82% of the plants were male sterile in the offspring of three of the M1 male sterile plants. The data suggest that at least some of the male sterilities obtained was genetically controlled and therefore inheritable. The availability of male sterility may eventually lead to hybrid cultivars in oilseed flax.
