Goose grazing shifts the dominance of annual vegetation in coconut plantations from aboveground biomass to the soil seed bank

摘要: Grazing is an effective way to manage understory weeds. However, how grazing affects the communities of weeds and the soil seed banks in tropical coconut plantations remains unclear. This study was conducted in a coconut plantation with geese grazing in Wenchang, a city in southern China. We classified grazing into four levels of intensity based on the distance from the goose pen, namely no grazing (NG), low-intensity grazing (LG), moderate-intensity grazing (MG), and high-intensity grazing (HG). We investigated the biomass and richness of aboveground vegetation and the density and richness of soil seed banks to reveal their responses to grazing activity. The results showed that as the grazing intensity increased, the average aboveground biomass of annual weeds decreased from 315.1 g m-2 to 44.5 g m-2. However, the density of annual plants in the soil seed bank increased from 5015.9 seeds m-2to 29007.4 seeds m-2. Grazing increased the richness of aboveground annual and perennial vegetation but had a lesser effect on the richness of annual and perennial plants in the soil seed bank. The similarity between aboveground vegetation and soil seed banks was low at all grazing intensities. Grazing directly or indirectly affected the density of annual plants in the soil seed bank by affecting the biomass of aboveground annual vegetation. The biomass of aboveground annual vegetation and the density of soil seed banks showed opposite trends in response to grazing intensity. This may be a survival strategy for annual plants in plantations in the tropics, where they can always occupy a relatively dominant position above or below ground depending on the grazing intensity. The results provide a reference for plantation management in tropical areas. Grazing can effectively control the biomass of annual weeds on the ground, while having little impact on the species diversity of the plantation ecosystem.
