A Low-Cost Harvest Area Measurement System Based on Ultrasonic and Hall-Effect Sensors

摘要: In this paper, a low-cost harvest area measurement system is presented. Two ultrasonic sensors are installed on both sides of the harvest divider to measure the cutting width and detect the crop presence at the start and end of harvesting. The static tests of the ultrasonic sensor with the edge of wheat as target show that the error of the ultrasonic measurement is 4.0 cm when the distance is less than 1.50 m and reaches about 13 cm when the distance is 2.20 m. Two Hall-effect sensors mounted on two wheels are used to measure the distance of a combine harvester traveled in a wheat field. Two tests were conducted in a wheat field to calculate the calibration coefficients of the Hall-effect sensor when the grain tank of the combine harvester was empty and full. The average calibration coefficient of the Hall-effect sensor is 1.075. Field tests show that the developed harvest area measurement system can improve the area measurement accuracy. The actual harvest area is calculated based on high-precision DGPS track points. The area error between the AFS yield monitoring system and the actual area is 10.5%. However, the error between the developed system and the actual area is 4.6%, and could decrease to 2.8% if the area error in both sides of the field is taken into account.
