Laboratory studies on the effect of the bioinsecticide GCSC-BtA on mortality and feeding of diamondback moth Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera : Plutellidae) larvae on cabbage

摘要: The present studies dealt with the effects of the bioinsecticide GCSC-BtA on the mortality and feeding inhibition of diamondback moth larvae, Plutella xylostella L. (Lep., Plutellidae). The experiments were conducted on cabbage by exposing the larvae to the cabbage leaf discs treated with bioinsecticide GCSC-BtA both in the non-selection and selection trials, in comparison with that treated with B.t. crystal from Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki and abamectin from Streptomyces avermitilis, respectively. The results revealed that all three bioinsecticides caused significantly higher mortalities as well as lower food loss in the non-selection experiments than in the control, where the mortality increased and leaf consumption decreased with increasing concentrations. The conjugated bioinsecticide GCSC-BtA against P. xylostella at a concentration of 0.40 mg/ml showed higher efficacy with 98.0% mortality and feeding inhibition with the value of 0.03 mm(2) leaf consumption per larva than B.t. crystal or abamectin did alone. When 50% untreated leaf disc was introduced in the selection experiment, the toxicities (LC50) and the feeding inhibitions of all the three bioinsecticides were significantly reduced. This might be due to the fact that the larvae consumed more untreated leaves, which suggested that the bioinsecticides should be applied at adequate field rates and thoroughly to ensure good coverage on all plant surfaces. The potential of GCSC-BtA to be a valuable new bioinsecticide can provide growers with a good alternative to the currently used pesticides for brassica crops is discussed.
