Plant venation-inspired bio-based adhesive with toughness, wide temperature adaptability, and long-term adhesion

摘要: The innovation of multifunctional bio-adhesive is essential for promoting a sustainable society by addressing the environmental and performance deficiencies of traditional adhesives. Inspired by the microstructure of plant venation, we crafted a dynamic network of natural rubber latex (NRL) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), resulting in a robust and tough adhesive (NRL/PVA) with superior long-term adhesion and reprocessability. The synergy of multi-level physical bonding (hydrogen bonds, mechanical anchoring) and chemically cross-linked covalent bonds at the spatial scale enhance the cohesive strength of the system, thereby boosting the adhesive's overall performance. Compared with other samples, the representative NRL/PVA adhesive with 60 % PVA content exhibits a maximum initial lap shear strength of 0.945 MPa, reaching 1.306 MPa after 2 days. The fracture toughness was 3.6 times that of the 0 % PVA sample. Additionally, NRL/PVA exhibits excellent temperature adaptability, maintaining high adhesion strength under both extreme high and low temperatures. Notably, it achieved an adhesion strength of 1.466 MPa at 100 degrees C. The diffusion and recovery capabilities of the dynamic network impart outstanding reprocessability to the adhesive. The incorporation of PVA also balances the hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity of the adhesive. Specifically, the hydroxyl groups in PVA improve the adhesive's wettability and adhesion to hydrophilic substrates like paper, while the hydrophobic nature of NRL maintains the adhesive's water resistance and overall balanced performance. Furthermore, NRL/PVA adhesive demonstrated excellent adhesion to various substrates (glass, wood, aluminum, polytetrafluoroethylene, silicone), opening up new possibilities for the application of bio-based adhesives.
