Strategy for sophorolipid pretreatment to enhance the production of volatile fatty acids from rubberwood hydrolysates during anaerobic fermentation of sludge

摘要: Anaerobic fermentation has become an important approach for value-added utilization of biomass. Herein, we proposed a strategy to achieve enhanced production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) through the combination of sophorolipid (SL)-pretreated sludge and rubberwood hydrolysates during anaerobic fermentation. Experimental results showed that the maximal VFAs production reached 3668.28 mg/L with 0.6 g/g TSS of SL, which was approximately 154.33 % higher than that of the control group. With the increase of rubberwood hydrolysates content, the anaerobic fermentation of SL-pretreated sludge changed from butyric acid-type to acetic acid-type, wherein the proportion of acetic acid in VFAs increased from 51.99 % to 76.02 %, whereas that of propionic acid decreased from 11.72 % to 3.71 %. The improved VFAs production was attributed to the effective disintegration of sludge, release of organic matter, inhibition of methanation, and increased diversity of microbial populations. This study provided new ideas for enhanced VFAs production from waste bioresources.
