Precision livestock farming for climate-resilient livestock management: a review of real-time monitoring and decision support systems

摘要: With the world population anticipated to reach 10 billion by the year 2050, the demand for animal-sourced foods is increasing, and this will severely burden sustainable livestock management. Climate change also worsens these issues, affecting animal welfare, productivity, and farm operations. Precision livestock farming (PLF) technology and decision support systems (DSS) offer effective means to solve this problem, as they allow for real-time monitoring and data-driven decision-making. Herein, this review explores the role of PLF and DSS in climateresilient livestock management and discusses advancements in sensor-based systems, the Internet of Things (IoT), and predictive analytics. While these technologies can improve efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and improve animal welfare, they are not widely adopted due to the high cost and scalability. This study identifies gaps in the system-level use of PLF and DSS and provides recommendations for future research. In the end, we addressed the challenges and benefits associated with PLF and DSS for climate-resilient livestock.
