Insights into the role of endogenous humic acid on antibiotics bioadsorption process in wastewater: Mechanisms and potential implications

摘要: Antibiotics, such as ofloxacin (OFL) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) often coexist with endogenous humic acid (EHA) in wastewater. However, the effects of EHA on the bioadsorption of OFL and CIP remain unknown. In this study, EHA showed lower affinity in forming the complexes with OFL/CIP as compared with the commercial humic acid (CHA), through forces like electrostatic effects and hydrogen bond at the molecular scale. Notably, the impacts of EHA and CHA on the bioadsorption of OFL/CIP were significantly different. CHA increased the theoretical OFL and CIP bioadsorption from 1.20 to 1.30 mg/g and 2.01 to 2.20 mg/g, respectively, but EHA reduced them to 0.89 and 1.93 mg/g, respectively. It was found EHA/CHA could be also bioadsorbed, resulting in the formation of wrinkles on the biosolid surface, thus greatly competing with OFL/CIP for metal binding sites. CHA was seen to bridge OFL/CIP and biosolid. Strong interactions of OFL/CIP-CHA caused OFL/CIP to be more co-bioadsorded. A similar bridging function was observed with EHA, as demonstrated by the desorption and re-adsorption processes of OFL/CIP. However, the weak interaction affinity between OFL/CIP and EHA cannot offset negative impacts of reduced binding sites. Overall, these results facilitated to understand the poor OFL/CIP removal in WWTPs.
