Bridging Gaps in Pakistan's Citrus Supply Chain: Postharvest Inefficiencies, Trade Dynamics, and Technological Solutions

摘要： The citrus industry in Pakistan plays a significant role in the country's agricultural economy, but it faces several challenges, particularly in postharvest handling and competitiveness in global markets. Despite being a major citrus producer, Pakistan struggles with inefficiencies in postharvest management, which results in high postharvest losses and limits its export growth. This review aims to examine the current postharvest practices in Pakistan's citrus industry and identify areas that require improvement, particularly in cold storage, handling, and transportation. It seeks to analyze the citrus trade dynamics between Pakistan and China, highlighting the impact of postharvest inefficiencies on export growth. Additionally, the review evaluates the role of agricultural technology cooperation, especially through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), in improving postharvest practice. We observed that Pakistan faces nearly 40% postharvest losses due to several factors, including manual harvesting, poor sorting, and inadequate cold storage facilities. These inefficiencies hinder the country's ability to compete in global citrus markets, despite its significant production capabilities. The study emphasizes the role of bilateral trade agreements and technology cooperation, particularly under CPEC, in fostering sustained growth in the industry. The findings of this study are replicable and applicable to other citrus-producing countries facing similar challenges.
