Reduction of Nitrogen Fertilizer and Retention of Crop Residue Affect Communities of Microbes and Induce Plant Growth Promoting Microbes in Five-Year Wheat-Rice Rotated Fields

摘要: Excessive application of Nitrogen (N) fertilizer easily causes soil and groundwater contamination. Crop residue can provide trophic resource in soil. Thus, reduction of N fertilizer input and retention of crop residue may be helpful to decrease fertilizer contamination and develop sustainable agriculture. In this study, the effects of N fertilizer and crop residue on rice yield, soil quality and soil microbial communities were investigated in the five-year wheat-rice rotated fields. The results showed that rice yields were maintained at a high level even if the N fertilizer was reduced to 70% of the normal content but crop residue was retained. The soil quality was not significantly affected by reducing application of N fertilizer. The abundance of bacterial and fungal communities was affected by reduction of N fertilizer and retention of crop residue. Bacteria involved in cellular community, metabolism of cofactors and vitamins, immune system, environmental adaptation were affected by reduced N utilization or crop residue. Some plant growth promoting microbes such as bacterial genus Caulobacter, fungi genera Funneliformis and Chaetomium were increased when N fertilizer was reduced or crop residue was retained. These microbes may promote plant growth by decomposing the complex organic matter to provide nutrient.
