Sugarcane Insect Pests in China: Species, Distribution and Population Dynamics

摘要: China is a major sugarcane-producing country in the world, and the crop is mainly cultivated in the tropical and subtropical regions of southern China. Pest infestation negatively affects yield and sugar, resulting in huge economic losses. Factors such as the changes in main sugarcane growing areas, climate, farming methods and introduction of new sugarcane varieties and management levels have influenced pest status and a corresponding loss in various sugarcane belts in China. This review focuses on the important insect pest species, distribution of leaf pests, stalk pests and subterranean pests of sugarcane in China and their damage symptoms at different growth stages of sugarcane. The damage potential and factors affecting the population dynamics of main insect pests were reviewed and discussed. This paper is expected to lay a foundation for periodic updates on the sugarcane pest status in China and to provide a baseline for monitoring as well as comprehensive pest management.
