摘要: Plastic pollution is one of the most concerning environmental problems in recent years. Among the diverse plastic debris, the micro- and nano-plastics (MNPs) have been paid particular attention for their potentially severe ecotoxicity and health risks. MNPs are extensively found within aquatic ecosystems and show huge impacts on fish, the most diverse and fundamental taxa in water areas. Although most studies showed negative effects of MNPs on fish, non-significant or positive effects have been also observed. The overall effect size and the drivers for these discrepancies are not clear. Through a meta-analysis, we comprehensively evaluate the effects of MNPs on fish functional adaptability (FFA), which is defined as a general concept to assess fish behavioral, physiological, morphological, and fitness responses to environmental stressors, to overcome this knowledge gap. Overall, our results showed that MNPs had a significantly negative impact on FFA, especially behaviors and fitness, based on the integrated analysis of 1652 cases from 92 studies across 37 fish species. Meta-regression and multi-model inference showed that functional category and general habitat of fish were the most important moderators for the MNPs effect on FFA. The MNPs exposed duration and fish developmental stage also modulated the effect size. These findings clearly elucidate the ubiquitous detrimental impacts of plastics on fish, highlight the necessity of incorporating multiple dimension indicators for toxicological evaluation, and provide novel insights for plastics management and policy making.
