Changes in Plant-to-Plant Variability among Maize Individuals and their Relationships with Plant Density and Grain Yield

摘要: In order to investigate the changes in plant-to-plant variability (PPV) in maize and their relationships with plant density and grain yield (GY), a 2-year field experiment was carried out at Ningxia University farm, Bole, 71 Group, and Qitai Farm in northwestern China. Ten modern cultivars were sown in 190 blocks in which plant density ranged from 6.0 to 15.96 plants m(-2), GY ranged from 12.28 to 21.71 t ha(-1). With an increase in plant density from 6.0 to 15.96 plants m(-2), plant height (PH) and ear height (EH) increased from 2.66 to 3.36 m and from 0.93 to 1.55 m, respectively; kernel number per ear (KNE) and kernel weight per ear (KWE) decreased from 675.4 to 342 kernels and from 257.1 g to 106.37 g, respectively. The regular degree (RD = 1/CV, where CV is the coefficient of variation) for PH, EH, KNE, KWE ranged from 8.70 to 45.33%, from 7.17 to 21.98%, from 2.79 to 9.61%, and from 2.24 to 10.75%, respectively; there was no significant relationship between RD and plant density; however, the RDs for EH and KNE increased linearly with increasing GY. RD and GY were not correlated within the following density ranges: 6.0-8.0 plants m-2 or >= 13 plants m(-2). However, within the density range 8.0-13.0 plants m(-2), the correlation coefficients for the relationship between RD and GY increased with increasing plant density. When maize plant growth stages and operational field regulations are taken into consideration, the RD for EH is a useful indicator of PPV.
