Can Urbanization Narrow the Gap of Meat Consumption Between Urban and Rural Area in China

摘要: The gap of meat consumption between urban and rural areas in China has experienced a firstly decreased and then increased process since China's reform and opening up, while the absolute amount of consumption kept synchronous growth, which made the potential of rural meat consumption always hard to release. With the constantly progress of urbanization, a mass of rural residents migrated to urban area, accurately grasping the influence of migration process on the meat consumption gap, and scientifically and reasonably distributing meat production can provide great importance to respond to latent demand expanding in meat consumption. This paper applied Smooth Transition Regression (STR) mode to discuss the long term effects of urbanization process to meat consumption gap between urban and rural area, and reveal the dynamic non-linear transfer characteristics. The empirical results showed that: when the actual consumption gap changed rapidly, the urbanization would significantly narrow the gap; however, when the actual consumption gap changed slowly, urbanization had no significant influence on narrowing the consumption gap. At present, China locates in the latter case.
