Study on the comprehensive measures for sustainable development of rainfed agriculture in the region of eastern Shanxi and western Henan

摘要: The experimental region, Shouyang County, is in the central area of Shanxi Province in the hilly areas of the Loess Plateau with an elevation of 1200 meters. This is a rainfed agricultural region in the semihumid area liable to drought. In these areas, agricultural resources,farmland, solar energy and crop residues, are abundant and the production potential of crops is great. The area is suitable for overall development of farming, forest and animal raising. However, the waste of natural resources is serious because of the disposition of resources and farming structure. Agricultural productivity and economic benefits are decreasing. The agricultural environment is worsening. The sustained agricultural development in the region faces a critical challenge. Investigation of the agricultural development and sustained utilization of natural resources for the region has an important theoretical and realistic significance. Based on an evaluation of agricultural resources, including climate, land, biomass, water and labor force, a linear programming model was developed for solution by microcomputer. Results indicated that a unitary farming structure is fundamental among various factors limiting sustainable development of agriculture. This decreases resource use and agricultural productivity as well as breaking the ecological balance. Adjusting agricultural structure is the key to making full use of nature resources, improving ecological environment and increasing economical benefit of agriculture. For this reason, full use of crop residue should be taken as a breakthrough point, meanwhile much effort should be devoted to developing animal husbandry. In addition, comprehensive measures have been adopted that include a combination of farming with animal raising, cropping of farmland while maintaining soil fertility, and regulating soil moisture and balancing soil nutrients. This system that improves soil fertility by combining organic with inorganic material, resulting in a beneficial cycling system of crop straw-animal raising-manure-farmland-grain. The whole function of farmland is enhanced significantly. Compared with 1990, grain output increased by 21.6%; water use efficiency by 2.7 kg mm(-1)ha(-1) and per capita income by 65.2% in 1995.
