Development and germplasm base of maize hybrids in China

摘要: The analysis was conducted to determine the breadth of genetic diversity and the severity of genetic vulnerability existing in maize hybrids and inbred lines used in China and whether they are changing over time. Maize cultivars' replacement has taken place several times since the 1950s. Single-cross hybrids have been predominant since the beginning of the 1970s, but with a few hybrids being grown in very large areas. Tracing back the pedigrees of these hybrids, it could be found that a few inbred lines, such as Mo17, Huangzaosi, 330, E28, Dan 340 and 478 have played a central role in hybrid development. Most of these inbreds and their derivatives originated from four populations, mio ("Reid Yellow Dent" and "Lancaster Sure Crop") from the U.S.A. and two ("Ludahonggu" and "Tangshan Sipingtou") from China. The results showed that a considerable degree of genetic vulnerability has existed in Chinese maize hybrids due to the narrow genetic base although the trend is alleviated to some extent in recent years. Strategies to enrich genetic diversity of future, germplasm used in breeding programmes are proposed.
