Flower strips increase natural pest control of peanut aphids, thereby enhancing crop yield

摘要: Flower strips can enhance biodiversity and predation on pests by attracting predators. To improve their effectiveness in natural pest control and crop production, we need to understand the mechanisms that determine their success or failure. We studied the impact of Shechuang (Cnidium monnieri) flower strips on the predation of peanut aphids (Aphis craccivora), a major pest in organic peanut farming. Using spatiotemporal patterns in the abundance of pests and their predators and molecular diet analysis of predators, along with data on crop yield, we found that planting Shechuang flower strips near peanut fields can significantly decrease peanut aphid density and subsequent crop damage. The flower strips supported four species of predator (Hippodamia variegate, Harmonia axyridis, Propylea japonica, and Orius sauteri). Aphid densities decreased up to 20 m into fields with flower strips compared to those without. Molecular analysis confirmed predator consumption of peanut aphids, particularly early in the growing season. Notably, due to a significant yield increase of 796 kg/ha, the overall peanut yield did not decrease despite 4 % of the land being allocated to flower strips. Pod maturity index was negatively correlated to the peanut aphid density, while peanut yield was positively correlated to the pod maturity index. This suggests that reduced aphid density adjacent to flower strips improved pod maturity index, ultimately leading to increased crop yield. Our results indicate that incorporating Shechuang flower strips into peanut production systems could offer effective pest management while potentially boosting crop productivity.
