摘要: Background and AimsBreeding increased soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) seed nitrogen (N) uptake despite the development of soil compaction worldwide. Whether and how crop breeding improved soybean N uptake under increasing soil compaction remains less explored. This study aims to determine the effects of crop breeding and soil compaction on soybean N uptakes from air (Ndfa) and soil (Ndfs) and to identify key root and nodule traits.MethodsThirty-three soybean cultivars released from 1952 to 2018 were planted in the field with and without applied soil compaction. Plant and seed Ndfa and Ndfs were quantified at the stages of fifth trifoliolate (V5), full bloom (R2), and harvest. Nodule and root traits were measured at R2.ResultsSoil compaction decreased total N uptake and Ndfa in seed and Ndfa in plant but increased plant total N uptake and Ndfs. R2-plant N uptake (particularly Ndfa) and Ndfa per nodule biomass and seed N uptake (Ndfa and Ndfs) increased with the year of release of cultivars irrespective of soil compaction. Seed Ndfa correlated to R2-plant Ndfa irrespective of soil compaction, but seed Ndfs didn't correlate to R2-plant Ndfs. R2-plant Ndfa correlated to specific nodule biomass, root tip number and area, and rhizosheath mass under soil compaction.ConclusionsBreeding for yield improvements enhanced soybean BNF ability and its transfer from plants to seeds, helping modern cultivars meet their N demands under the developing soil compaction. The increase in plant Ndfa is associated with the improvement in root and rhizosheath traits.
